The Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph (OCC) is an iconic, military-grade tool watch from the mid-to-late 1990s that holds a unique place in space exploration history. While casual enthusiasts immediately think of the Omega Speedmaster, the Fortis OCC was officially certified by Roscosmos in 1994 and served as the crew equipment for the historic EUROMIRe crew equipment for the EUROMIR missions to the Mir Space Station.
The watch is powered by the legendary Lemania 5100 automatic movement and the defining trait of this movement is its central minute totalizer. Instead of reading minutes off a tiny sub-dial, a large, sweeping central hand tracks elapsed minutes directly against the main dial, accented in high-visibility orange. It features a dedicated 24-hour sub-dial at 12 o'clock. This was highly valued by cosmonauts to combat spatial disorientation and maintain a clear sense of AM vs. PM while orbiting Earth.
The 38mm stainless steel case features a uniform, sandblasted matte finish designed to prevent reflective glare inside a cockpit or spacecraft. The dial has a soft, matte black base layer which prevents light bounce. The hour numerals are tritium painted and sub-dials are intentionally flat and un-ringed to prioritize pure, unpretentious legibility over luxury styling.
